23 teams. 23 rounds of intense and tireless quizzing. The danger of tornadoes, carpenter bees, and snakes. Thousands of points and hundreds of quiz outs. But only one South East Regional Champion.
This weekend hundreds of Junior Bible Quizzers, coaches and officials assembled with one goal in mind, to find the Regional Champion. These 23 elite teams assembled from across the entire South East Region in the small town of Askewville, NC.
From Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and North Carolina the 90+ quizzers began the competition Friday morning. Beginning with a short morning service, by NexGen Kids Ministry, and then heading out directly to the first five rounds of quizzing, then after a brief lunch break, the teams resumed for the next eight rounds. But late in the afternoon, phones started erupting with the haunting sound of a tornado warning. After evacuating some of the teams from their quiz rooms, and with direct confirmation from the County the decision was made to continue quizzing since no tornadoes were in the area. And so quizzing resumed and no further problems arose. Then the day was adjourned and some teams left feeling defeated, and others left rejoicing in their victory. When the day ended CICF Children of God was leading the pack and was undefeated, but they were closely followed by CICF Light of God and the Candy Quizzers.
As Saturday dawned, the 23 teams all knew their fight for a spot at the National Festival was far from over. The quizzers and officials crowded into the quiz room for ten final matches. Each of the teams rode a roller coaster over the course of the quizzing. The previously favored CICF Children of God lost their third match of the day, putting their lead in jeopardy. But after the grueling ten rounds all of the teams gathered in the large gym for lunch. Some confident they would be traveling to Wisconsin, others wishing their performance had been better.
The suspense built through the afternoon as NexGen hosted another service encouraging the Quizzers and adults to be connected with Jesus. But then finally the time for the awards ceremony began. As Dan Anderson, the Regional Coordinator stepped onto the stage, everyone’s anxious anticipation would soon be fulfilled.
The awards ceremony flew by. And in the end, the North Carolina teams left their significant footprint in South East Regional history. Coming home with the first place title was CICF Children of God, the NC State Runner-up. North Carolina will be represented by 4 teams at the National Festival in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. These include, CICF Light of God, CICF Children of God, Calvary Genesis A, and the Wilmington Warriors. All four of the top individual quizzers were from the First In Flight State, Each with over 2,400 points and achieving over 10 quiz outs.
North Carolina displayed four top place individual finishes, four teams in the top eight, and over 23,200 collective points. But will these North Carolina succeed in the Nation’s elite competition? Only time will tell who will be the National Champions in Oak City, Wisconsin.
